Match Goals

To maintain total focus throughout the4 match days. To display appropriate leadership traits towards my partner making his first-class debut. To try and overcome several, potential distractions (light, rain, ground construction noise)through meticulous preparation and planning.

Post-Match Meeting

Decisions and performance related comments from post match meeting were: None of my decisions were raised at the meeting. Tim Coyle stated that some excellent decisions were made, particularly with adjudication of lbws where the impact was outside the line. Both camps were very pleased with the overall performance of the umpires.

Review of Decisions

The number of decisions gradually increased for me as the match wore on. On day one I had intense focus but only one or two appeals – one of these was in the last over! On day 4 I made an excellent decision to reprieve Butterworth from an appeal for a catch at slip. Katich and Haddin had started to “charge me” as I said not out. The ball had in fact hit the edge of a foot hold and flown straight to slip. All decisions were accepted without fuss. I had a considerable number of overs of spin to stand to in this match, many of them on the final day as the pitch was wearing. My decision making was calm and considered throughout.

Positives

Worked very well with…….. on debut. There were a considerable number of visitors and distractions for him on Day 1. I felt that I managed to assist to keep him “on track” and focused throughout the 4 days with plenty of advice and encouragement. Match management was very good. We persisted playing through about 50 minutes of drizzle before calling the players from the field after 1 hour of Day 3. After viewing the weather radar, we called an early lunch and lost only 30 minutes of play. Before the game we had consulted both teams regarding the use of lights (only 3 towers available) as in the previous game both sides had refused to have them used (only 2 towers available). In this instance we had a conflict which, I feel we handled well and were fair to both teams. Tasmania batted without the lights for a long period but were always aware that we would not offer light until we had at least tried the lights. As a result, we managed an extra 80 minutes play on Day 3 by using the lights. At the eventual suspension of play there was a difference in light conditions between the two ends of the pitch. The offer of light was made, and the teams left the field without fuss. Moved well and energetically into position throughout the 4 days.Felt very confident, focused, and was seeing the ball really well. Excellent rapport with both teams, especially New South Wales. I felt that I satisfied all the expectations that people had of me in providing experience, leadership, and total supportfor………...

Areas to Work on and Action for Improvement

No real weaknesses apparent from this game. At times my focus might have been a little “internalized” at square leg – needed to “switch down” whilst walking back out to position. Was very, perhaps too, conscious of the rain and light conditions at times whilst at square leg – no problem with this at the bowlers end though. Conditions on day 3 were such that it was reasonable to keep playing but a judgement had to be made exactly when to come off to avoid ground damage – I felt we made a good call on this one. The “use of lights” issue was slightly concerning although I am unlikely to come across a similar situation in future i.e., only partial lighting available.

Observations, General Comments & Summary

Conditions were tough in this game. The very noisy construction work went on relentlessly for the 4 days. Over 1000 screaming school children attended on Day 2 and light and rain issues were factors throughout. To come through the game error free was hugely satisfying for me. I am currently umpiring strongly and with great confidence.Having plenty of appointments is proving to be most beneficial to me in that I am working through my routines and slipping easily into the mindset of intense focus required at this level. I look forward to my next assignment and continuing to umpire well.
